A Future Rebuilt

DEVIN’S PAST

Sometimes, life blindsides you. It happened to Devin. He had a career in the medical field. He’d been in his apartment for four years. But suddenly, things went sideways. A sharp rent increase. A lease not renewed. And before he knew it – with no time to save up first and last months’ rent and security deposit to get into a new place – he was on the street.

But even if life blindsides you, sometimes bad things can turn out good.

This turned out to be more than “just” a place for Devin to sleep.

Devin can tell you personally. He thought he just needed a place to stay. But he found so much more. “Faith was never a huge thing in my life,” he said. But discovering the reality of God’s love, “I’ve been completely amazed…God had a plan for me!”

Just a few months ago, he was in crisis. “Not knowing where you’re going to live,” he says, “is one of the most stressful things, especially when you’re living paycheck-to-paycheck…But the Mission welcomed me with open arms.”

DEVIN’S PRESENT

As Devin attended the New Life Program’s classes and he learned about the role of faith in his recovery, he began regularly attending a local church. He has found a community of fellow believers, made new friends and developed a passion for Missions. He has since gone on two Mission trips sharing his faith and testimony of the Springfield Rescue Mission.

While at SRM, he began to explore his gifts and abilities through SRM’s Learning Center. There, he discovered he had a real ability to help others. He began assisting fellow residents prepare resumes, practice interview skills and build confidence as they work towards their own fresh starts.

This new found ability led him to enter into SRM’s Mentorship Program where Devin began another leg of his journey. With support from the Rescue Mission and the encouragement, help and guidance of his new mentor – a SRM volunteer with a passion for sharing his medical professional experience – Devin took a bold step and enrolled in an online EKG Technician Certification Program through Springfield Technical Community College.

DEVIN’S STORY IS NOT OVER

As Devin works toward graduation, he remains committed to giving back. He plans to continue volunteering in the Learning Center, helping new and current residents strengthen their digital skills, manage finances and build the foundational education needed for long-term success.

Grounded in the stability and structure of the New Life Program and empowered by the skills he has developed through the Learning Center, Devin is now preparing for the next chapter of his life. His goals include securing his own apartment and pursuing a meaningful career in the medical field.
